Baby Safety at Home: Household Items to Keep Away from Your Baby

Baby Safety at Home: Household Items to Keep Away from Your Baby

12 Sep 2023

Ensuring your baby’s safety at home sounds easier than it seems. Especially when you’re the primary caregiver. Your home is the baby’s primary environment so creating one that is safe includes removing potential hazards, placing dangerous objects out of reach and creating safe boundaries so your baby is always monitored.

Let’s look at some common household items that might actually be dangerous when placed within reach of your little one.

1. Cleaning Products:
Cleaning products like bleach, disinfectants, and detergents are essential for maintaining a clean home, but they can be extremely harmful if your baby gets their hands on them. Make sure to store these items out of reach in a high cabinet with a childproof lock. Always secure the lids tightly after use.

2. Sharp Objects:
Sharp objects such as scissors, knives, and even some kitchen utensils pose a threat to your baby's safety. Keep them locked away in a drawer or cabinet with childproof latches. Consider investing in baby-proofing gadgets for drawers and cabinets to add an extra layer of protection.

3. Medications:
Prescription and over-the-counter medications should be stored far from your baby's reach. Many medications can look like candy to a curious child, so it's essential to use childproof containers and store them in a high, locked cabinet.

4. Small Objects:
Babies love to explore the world by putting everything in their mouths, make sure to keep small items like buttons, coins, and small toys out of reach.

5. Plastic Bags:
Plastic bags can be suffocation hazards for babies. Always store them safely away in a drawer or a high cupboard. Consider investing in reusable shopping bags to reduce the number of plastic bags in your home.

6. Electrical Cords and Outlets:
Babies are naturally curious about electrical outlets and cords, which can lead to dangerous situations. Use outlet covers to block unused outlets and invest in cord organizers to keep them out of reach. Secure heavy appliances like TVs and stereos to prevent them tipping over.

7. Toiletries:
Toiletries like shampoo, lotion, and even toothpaste can be harmful if ingested or applied incorrectly. Store these items in a bathroom cabinet with a childproof latch.

8. Plastic Wrapping Materials:
Plastic wrap, plastic bags, and plastic packaging materials can pose a suffocation risk to your baby. Dispose of them properly or keep them in a secured trash can with a lid.

9. Heavy Objects:
Babies can be surprisingly strong, and they may try to pull down heavy objects like vases or picture frames. Make sure to secure these items on shelves or tables out of your baby's reach.

10. Pet Supplies:
If you have pets, keep their food, water bowls, and litter boxes away from your baby's play areas. Also, supervise interactions between your baby and pets to ensure everyone's safety.
In addition to keeping these household items out of your baby's reach, it's crucial to keep a watchful eye on your little one. While it might not be possible to always watch your baby during the day, investing in the right baby monitor goes a long way.

Remember, creating a safe environment for your baby is an ongoing process that evolves as your child grows and becomes more mobile(hello toddler tantrums!). By taking these steps and being proactive in baby safety, you can provide your little one with the best possible start in life and enjoy your parenting journey to the fullest, whilst still keeping your peace of mind.
